In November 2018, the Centre Leader of CERHI was elected into the Fellowship of the African Academy of Science at a ceremony in Pretoria, South Africa. In making the award, the President of AAS, Professor Felix Dapare Dakora, pointed to the high excellence that Professor Okonofua in research, publications and citations in the field of reproductive health, as one of the most impressive in the African continent.
CERHI has received a four-year curriculum validation from the Agency for Public Health Education Accreditation (APHEA) for its Masters programme in Public Health (Reproductive and Family Health) on 21st May, 2018. APHEA is an independent body established as an International Non-profit Association (INPA) which represents the five leading associations of public health in the European Region and is committed to assuring and improving the quality of educational activities throughout the European Region and the globe. APHEA Accreditation is aimed at supporting CERHI in continued amelioration of education and training for public health workforces throughout the African region and the world at large. Professor Friday Okonofua, Centre Leader of CERHI was at the 2018 International Conference on Family Planning (ICFP) held from 12-15 November in Kigali, Rwanda. The conference was co-hosted by the Government of Rwanda, represented by the Ministry of Health, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Institute for Population and Reproductive Health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Over 3,000 high-level policy makers, scientists, researchers, program managers, civic leaders, youth, and faith-based organizations from about 120 countries shared their best research and practices to expand access to family planning services. The paper presented was “I don’t think family planning is helping women rather it is “killing” many women”: Uncovering persistent ignorance and misconceptions about family planning in rural Nigeria.
Five faculty staff of CERHI attended a workshop organized by the African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) on Advanced Research Methodology in Kigali, Rwanda from November 5 – 9, 2018. The workshop was participatory and discussion-based. Participants were taken through the following areas: Responsible conduct of research Quantitative research (design, data collection, and analysis) Qualitative research (design, data collection, and analysis) Effective literature search and retrieval Citations and referencing (using Mendeley or EndNote) Effective communication of scientific evidence
From 30th July to 3rd August 2018, the first batch of CERHI Staff attended a workshop organized by the Association of African Universities (AAU) in Collaboration with the African Evaluation Association (AfrEA) on Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning. This took place at AAU, East Legon, Accra- Ghana The 5 day introduction to Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (MEL) was targeted at individuals who are new to the field of Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning and those who wish to formalize their existing understanding which had been developed through work based experience. The workshop which started on the 27th of November, 2018 kicked off with the introduction of Key Speakers and Attendees by Mr Frank Adjei, the Project Accountant of the Association of African Universities (AAU). This was then proceeded by a series of teachings by the Key Facilitator, Prof Frimpong on the “Evolving and Dynamic Role of the 21st Century Accountant.” In the course of the days following, participants (drawn from different parts of Africa) were trained in various areas ranging from Resource Mobilization, Enterprise Development to Research Proposal Writing and a refresher course on Understanding and Preparation of Basic Financial Statements as well as Financial Statement Analysis.
